Exploring the Power of Character Traits in Writing Books & Short Stories

Character traits play a crucial role in bringing stories to life. As readers, we are naturally drawn to well-developed and relatable characters. In this blog post, we will delve into the significance of character traits in storytelling and how authors can effectively use them to captivate their readers' imaginations.

1. Understanding Character Traits:

Character traits are the unique qualities, characteristics, and attributes that define a character's personality. They shape their behavior, actions, and decisions throughout the story. Each character trait adds depth and dimension to the narrative, making the characters more realistic and relatable.

2. Creating Memorable Characters:

To create memorable characters, authors must carefully craft their character traits. By giving characters a distinct set of traits, writers can make them stand out in readers' minds. Whether it's a protagonist, antagonist, or supporting character, well-defined traits help readers connect with the characters on a deeper level.

3. The Role of Positive Traits:

Positive character traits are often associated with heroes and protagonists. These traits include courage, kindness, determination, and honesty. Authors can inspire readers and create characters worth rooting for by incorporating positive characteristics. Positive traits also help characters overcome challenges, demonstrate growth, and serve as role models for readers.

4. The Complexity of Negative Traits:

Negative character traits, on the other hand, add complexity and conflict to the story. These traits can range from arrogance and greed to jealousy and deceit. Characters with negative traits often serve as obstacles or antagonists, driving the plot forward and creating tension. Exploring the reasons behind these negative traits adds depth to the story and allows readers to understand the character's motivations.

5. Balancing Character Traits:

While having a mix of positive and negative traits is essential, finding the right balance is crucial. Characters that are too one-dimensional may appear flat and uninteresting. Conversely, characters with too many conflicting traits may confuse readers. Striking a balance and ensuring that character traits align with the story's theme and plot is key to creating compelling and believable characters.

6. Showing, Not Telling:

When introducing character traits, authors should aim to show rather than tell. Instead of explicitly stating a character's traits, writers can reveal them through actions, dialogue, and interactions with other characters. This allows readers to draw their own conclusions and actively engage with the story.

7. Character Growth and Development:

Character traits also play a significant role in character growth and development. As the story progresses, characters may undergo changes and evolve. This growth can be reflected in the development or transformation of their traits. Authors create dynamic and relatable arcs that resonate with readers by showcasing how characters overcome their flaws or embrace positive traits.

Character traits are the building blocks of compelling storytelling. They breathe life into characters, evoke emotions, and drive the narrative forward. By carefully crafting and balancing these traits, authors can create unforgettable characters that resonate with readers long after they have finished the book. So, whether you're a budding writer or an avid reader, understanding the power of character traits will undoubtedly enhance your appreciation of storytelling.

Tips on Writing Short Stories: Negative Character Traits of an Overall Good Person- Character Development

Friday, July 5, 2019

Tips on Writing Short Stories

Negative character traits can be found in individuals who are otherwise considered overall good people.

These traits may not necessarily define their entire personality, but they can have a negative impact on their relationships and interactions with others. Here are a few negative character traits that an overall good person could have:

1. Stubbornness: While being determined and sticking to one's beliefs can be seen as a positive trait, excessive stubbornness can hinder open-mindedness and compromise. A good person who is overly stubborn may struggle to accept differing viewpoints or adapt to new ideas, leading to conflicts and difficulties in their relationships.

2. Judgmental Attitude: Even the most virtuous individuals can sometimes fall into the trap of being judgmental. This negative trait can manifest as a tendency to make quick assumptions about others without considering their perspectives or circumstances. This judgmental attitude can alienate people and prevent meaningful connections from forming.

3. Perfectionism: Striving for excellence is admirable, but when taken to the extreme, it can lead to perfectionism. A good person with perfectionistic tendencies may become overly critical of themselves and others, setting unrealistic, impossible standards to meet. This can result in feelings of dissatisfaction, anxiety, and strained relationships.

4. People-Pleasing: While being considerate and caring towards others is a positive trait, an excessive need to please everyone can be detrimental. A reasonable person who is constantly seeking validation and avoiding conflict may compromise their own values and beliefs to maintain harmony, leading to a lack of authenticity and potential resentment.

5. Indecisiveness: Good people who struggle with making decisions can find themselves in constant indecisiveness. This trait can be frustrating for both the individual and those around them, as it can lead to delays, missed opportunities, and uncertainty. Indecisiveness can also make others question the person's ability to take charge and make necessary choices.

6. Overly Critical: A good person with a tendency to be overly critical may unintentionally hurt others' feelings. While constructive criticism can be helpful, constant fault-finding and nitpicking can create a negative atmosphere and erode trust in relationships. This trait can hinder personal growth and damage connections with others.

It is important to note that having these negative character traits does not negate an individual's overall goodness, but being aware of them and working towards self-improvement can lead to personal growth and more fulfilling relationships.

Why I Went to Fashion School- Associate's Degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising

Monday, June 18, 2018

I've always been passionate about fashion. I love the way clothes can make me feel, and I love the way they can express my personality. In high school, I started taking fashion design classes, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the industry.

I chose to get a fashion design and merchandising degree to learn everything I could about the fashion industry. I wanted to understand the different aspects of the business, from design to production to marketing. I also wanted to develop my own skills as a designer and learn how to create stylish and functional clothes.

I'm so glad I decided to get a fashion design and merchandising degree. It has given me the knowledge and skills to succeed in the fashion industry. I'm excited to start my career and see what the future holds.

Here are some of the reasons why I chose to get a degree in fashion design and merchandising:

I love learning.

I want to learn everything I can about the fashion industry.

I want to develop my skills as a designer and create stylish and functional clothes.

I want to work in a creative and fast-paced environment.

I want to be part of an industry that is constantly evolving.

The only downside is I attended a predatory school that shut down shortly after graduation. The school was Gibbs College, which turned into Sanford Brown College. Do your research before choosing a college. I was a first-generation college student so I didn't know.

If you're thinking about getting a degree in fashion design and merchandising, I highly recommend it. It's a great way to learn about the industry and develop your skills to succeed.
